Hi world, I'm Bogey!

I'm happy to say that I'm one of the newest foster dogs here at KAR! My foster mom, Danielle, saved me from Animal Control last Thursday and I've been having fun with her ever since! I was there for 50 days and I am SOOOO glad to be out and in a home with other dog friends to play with, where I can get the exercise and training I need!

So, I'm estimated to be a 6 month old male Pit Bull! I probably have a few different bully breeds in me, but it's hard to say which ones; they're all so similar!

I am a little mouthy, but it's gotten SOOOO better since I've been in my foster home! I am a puppy so I do chew on things I shouldn't, but it's really easy to get me to chew on a good toy instead. I know how to Sit, lay Down, and respond pretty well to my name already. I LOVE playing with other dogs and could really benefit from having another dog in the home I get adopted into!

I don't guard any of my food or toys from my people or my pals, and I have NEVER used the bathroom inside, I wouldn't dream of it! I will try to break out of a crate if you put me in one, just to test my limits, but if I can't get out in a few seconds, I lay down and will quietly sleep through the night, with no accidents! I think an airline crate will be the best choice for keeping me in. :)

I think that's all there is to say about me right now, I'm going to be getting "neutered"... whatever that is... in a week and then I will be available for adoption! So if you're interested in adding me to your home, keep checking back to the KAR website, and I will be there soon! :D

It's World Spay Day!

It's World Spay Day 2013, so take a cue from Bob Barker and "have your pets spayed or neutered."

Spaying or neutering your pet will ensure that they are happier and healthier. It also help control the pet population and save lives.

7 Facts about Cat and Dog Overpopulation

  1. Pet overpopulation is the leading killer of cats and dogs in our country.
  2. An estimated 3.7 million animals are euthanized in animal shelters each year across the United States.
  3. 84% of owned cats and 72% of owned dogs are already spayed or neutered.
  4. The majority of pet overpopulation comes from unaltered pets living in low-income neighborhoods.
  5.  Fifty thousand puppies and kittens are born every day in our country.
  6. U.S. taxpayers spend up to $2 billion each year on services to collect, house, destroy and dispose of unwanted animals.
  7. One cat or dog is euthanized every eight seconds!

For more information about the importance of spaying and neutering your pets, read our KAR Friends February eNewsletter with special articles about World Spay Day.

World Spay Day February 26, 2013

World Spay Day is an annual event of The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International to inspire people to save animals' lives by spaying or neutering pets and feral cats. World Spay Day officially takes place on the last Tuesday of February—but events will be running all through the month! The 18th Annual World Spay Day is Feb. 26, 2013. All donations made to The HSUS through the Pageant by contestants and/or voters, as well as all optional category entry fees collected by The HSUS, benefit a grant program created by The HSUS to help participating organizations continue their valuable spay and neuter work after World Spay Day 2013 ends.

In honor of World Spay Day, The Humane Society of the United States introduces the all-new World Spay Day 2013 Pet Pageant, an online photo pageant where your pet takes center stage!
Submit your pet's photo to the Main Pageant category to compete in both the Judges' Choice Awards and Popular Pet Awards for the ultimate title: Miss or Mister World Spay Day 2013! Entering the Main Pageant category is easy and free. Simply upload a digital photo of your pet and tell us a little about him or her, then share your photo far and wide to get votes. You can also enter as a memorial tribute to a pet who is no longer with us. We have three incredible animal lovers — photographers Robin Layton and Seth Casteel, and actor Tricia Helfer — to help us pick the winners of the Judges' Choice Awards!

The Yellow Dog Project

The Yellow Dog Project is a global movement for parents of dogs that need space, aka DINOS (Dogs In Need Of Space).

The goal of the Yellow Dog Project is to remind people to ask before petting and to educate other dog owners to recognize the signs of a dog that's not interested--in human or animal contact--by promoting awareness to the cause through social media, physical awareness (yellow ribbon), and educational courses for kids and parents.

There are many reasons why a dog may need space:
  • It's recovering from surgery
  • It's being rehabilitated
  • It's scared or reactive around other dogs or people
  • It's in training
  • It has health issues

If you see a dog with a yellow ribbon or something yellow on its leash, recognize that this dog needs space. Please do not approach the dog--do not approach the dog with your dog--and maintain some distance or give this dog's person time to move out of your way.

Always be respectful of other dogs and always ask before approaching or petting any dog.  The dog and its owner will greatly appreciate it.

National Love Your Pet Day!

Show your pet some extra special love today, because it's National Love Your Pet Day!

It's a great day to show your pets how much you really care and a great excuse to spoil them! So give your pets some extra treats today, plan some fun activities, pamper them silly, and shower them with all the attention they can handle!

Here are some ways you can celebrate:
  • Go for a walk
  • Cuddle up together with a warm blanket--especially in this chilly winter weather
  • Play with their favorite toy
  • Pamper them with a "spa day"--groom and brush them at home or take a trip to the groomer
  • Bring them home a special treat or a new toy
  • Create a fun game of hide-and-seek with your pets favorite treats and toys hidden around the house for them to find.

How will you celebrate National Love Your Pet Day?

Tiana's Happy Tail

Hi, I've read your Happy Tails Blog and I've been trying to get my cat Tiana's story featured in a Happy Tail since I adopted her a little over a year ago!  I thought the blog might be a nice opportunity to share about my amazing little baby girl!

Tiana's story actually starts with her "big sister," Mariah.  Mariah was my cat for the 10 years of her life until we lost her battle with Feline Leukemia.  I was heartbroken, but I knew Mariah's passing also meant an opportunity to give an amazing life to another special kitty.  I was browsing KAR's website one day in late September/early October 2011 when I saw the CUTEST little face ever!  This little 3 month old kitten (then called Ginny Weasley) had such personality in her eyes, I KNEW I absolutely HAD to have her!

Tiana's First Night Home

I worked at the mall at the time, and on October 2nd, Tiana's foster had volunteered to bring her to an adoption event there.  I got to work early that day just so I could meet the little "fuzzball" (as my dad nicknamed her) and it was love at first sight... for both of us!  I cuddled little Tiana until I had to go to work and arranged to officially adopt her the next day. I was so excited about my new little baby that I even returned to spend my lunch break with her :)

Study Buddy
The following night was the first of many "kitty parties" we have had... Where I devote an entire evening just for playing with Tiana and all her toys!  She is a spoiled little kitty, with more toys than many children have!  And of course she gets lots of love and cuddles all the time.  She is truly my best friend in the entire world; she insists on being in the same room as me at all times, and there are times when I can't get her off my lap!  She sleeps in bed with me all night and "helps" me make my coffee in the morning.  When it's time to study, Tiana also likes to "help" me with that.  She is even an excellent alarm clock; when I hit the "snooze" button too many times, she'll meow at me and make sure I get up :)

I love my little cat SO much!  She helped heal my broken heart after Mariah passed and continues to bring joy to my life every single day!  I am so thankful everyday for KAR and it's volunteers for uniting us, she is such a special little kitty and I feel so lucky and blessed that she is mine! :)                                                                                                     ~Kaili

Sasha Gets a New Home for the Holidays!

Sasha went to her forever home a few days before Christmas. Her dreams for a new mom and dad came true. And, the extra bonus was two doggy pals, Bansky and Pearl. Her family sent some updates about her first few days in their home.

Sasha, now called Sagan, explored her new home with enthusiasm and confidence, which we were really impressed with. We hoped she would be the right companion for Bansky, who is young and spirited. Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for because these two are already boon companions! The world and our home is their playground. Pearl was a little slower to accept change, just as we thought she would. However, Sagan has been very respectful of her.

We have a set routine at dinner time. Our dogs eat at the same time, in the same room, and are respectful towards each other's space. It went great! Sagan seems to be a smart and adaptable dog. She has, after a bit of training, gotten used to the doggy door. As I write this, Bansky and Sagan are sharing a dog bed while they each enjoy their evening rawhide. Also during the evening, all five of us were very calm and cozy on the couch.

Here is a doggy family portrait with Sagan on the chair. So darn cute! It took both of us to get the shot, one armed with camera, the other with treats and a bit of good behavior from the dogs. We took Sagan and Banksy on a 2-1/2 mile walk and she is currently sawing logs on the couch. I truly understand how the heart gets wrapped up in these animals.

Denny is a Kalamazoo Animal Rescue cat who has a happy tail to share.

He was found near the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek airport by a person working at a pest control business.  Denny was definitely not a pest and showed up clearly needing some help.  His tail had been severely injured and he was very cold and hungry.  It was also Christmas Eve.

The person who found Denny called Kalamazoo Animal Rescue.  Luckily we did have room to bring Denny into a warm and safe foster home.

Denny proved to be very content as an indoor cat.  He was calm and easy going and seemed really happy to not be outside in the cold any longer.  A vet looked at Denny's tail as soon as possible and concluded he would need to have about a third of it amputated.  The surgery went well and Denny didn't seem to miss that part of his tail at all.

Shortly thereafter, Denny was adopted by a wonderful person who had recently lost a cat.  He settled into his new home easily and will never again need to worry about fending for himself on a cold dark night.
Denny loves to play in a bowl of water

I Would Like to Introduce You to Hannah and This Gorgeous Puppy!

Hannah is a brand new dog foster with KAR and she just rescued her first puppy today!

Hannah has fostered two cats for KAR and has decided to give the dogs a try, and we are so happy she did! Hannah and her family live on a lake and have two other dogs, so this little girl will get plenty of great exercise and socialization!  While she will surely enjoy her time at her foster home, the ultimate goal is to find her forever home.

This beautiful pup was found as a stray and brought to the local shelter. She had only been there for two weeks, but she was starting to develop kennel cough so we wanted to get her in to a foster home ASAP!

This little puppy is a three-month old pit bill mix and she's still waiting on a name--any good ideas?? She's a cuddlebug and pretty mellow for a puppy, and she loves to play with other dogs.

She should be ready to go to a new home in a few weeks, so if you know of any great families that are looking to add a puppy to their home please send them to KAR!
